Since its inception, NICRH in 1986 at Mohakhali, Dhaka. When it was named as Rotary Cancer detection unit (RCDU). Departmen of surgical oncology was run only as outpatient department. In the year1991, this Institute started 50 bed indoor facilities, the department of surgical oncology started its formal journey. Associate Professor Dr. Md. Shahid Hossain started the indoor first time in NICRH that was subsequently run by Dr. Abdul Haque 1992. Two visionary and enthusiastic surgeons Dr. Ahmed Sayeed and Dr. Md. Saiful Islam (1992) joined in this department of surgical oncology. The seeds of Surgical Oncology were sown at National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital, Mohakhali, Dhaka by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Sayeed , a former general surgeon who dreamed the prospect of surgical oncology in Bangladesh, become pioneer surgical oncologist in Bangladesh. In the mean time Dr. Abdul Hakim Akhand and Dr. Aktaruzzaman also accompanied them who flourish the department in various dimension render their service upto 2002. In this period the department became full fledged and became the one and only department of surgical oncology of Bangladesh. There after Dr. AFM Anowar Hossain (2000) , Dr. Mollah Md. Abu Sayed (2001) started to run the department who actually continued the services for longest period here in NICRH and served as well as developed the subject. Prof. Md. Shahid Hossain jointed the department in 2001 for the second time & continued for next 3 years. With his dynamic and long-run effort to start post graduate surgical oncology course MS (Surgical Oncology) able to start in the department in his tenure(2004) which was successfully run till to date . Prof. Md. Hashem Bhuiyan & Prof. Firoz Quader worked in the department for short perind of time between 2005-2007 . Finally legendary surgical oncologist Professor Mizanur Rahman joined in the department in the year 2007. The institute upgraded to 150 bed hospital in 2009. He enriched the department by his knowledge and emphasized on research work . From 2015 the institute become 300 bed hospital and the department split in to two units for the convenient of work . The department become one of the vital department among other 22 department in NICRH and It became an integral part of comprehensive multidisciplinary department provider for cancer management. More than 15 eminent surgical oncologists are working in different capacity in the two units of the departments. Now the department has 25 government employed team member along with & residents. Eighteen government & private-public private candidates already attained masters of surgery (MS) in surgical oncology from the department. Dr Tapesh Kumar Paul ( later Professor) was the first MS in Surgical Oncology followed by Dr. Laila Shirin , Dr. Md JahangirKabir, Dr. Minhaz Bhuiyan, Dr. Hasanuzzaman. Residency course was started in Phase-A MS surgical oncology followed by Phase-B at NICRH in 2015 under the curriculum of BSMMU. Professor Dr. AFM Anwar Hossain took the charge of HOD in 2017. Our surgical oncology department entered into the Era of Laparoscopy cancer surgery under the supervision of Associate professor Dr. Setabur Rahman and the department got its new HOD. By this way Surgical oncology department reached at its greatest heights.
